About the Lucas Tooth Shield, which is awarded annually
to the most improved SACF detachment ?
The Army Cadet magazine ran a piece on the shield in
2002 asking if any County ACF Units awarded the Shield.
Sadly, my response, with photographs, was never
published ! It was originated by a philanthropic
benefactor, Sir Lucas-Tooth, who, many years ago, presented shields to
each County Church Lad's Brigade unit and left a
considerable sum of money in a charitable trust to
support youth work. I recall from my Essex Boys'
Brigade days in the 1950s we had a Battalion Lucas
Tooth Championship Shield, awarded for gymnastic
prowess and potential gymnasts were given a Lucas Tooth
Award for attendance on a course. (I never qualified !)
The Norfolk shield resides in the entrance to the
Norfolk/Suffolk Weekend Training Centre, Croxton Road,
Thetford. That for Suffolk is in the Cty HQ in Ipswich.
They depict, as do all such majestic Lucas Tooth
Shields, a Knight in armour, bearing a shield and
sword.
The University of Kent at Canterbury
have an award : 'Lucas Tooth Scholar'.
