| History of Leek Training Area The Camp is 3 miles north of Leek, on the A53 Leek to Buxton road. From 1941 to 1944 the Camp was used by American troops preparing to fight in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. In 1944 the departure of the American troops saw the arrival of German and Italian POW followed by Displaced persons from the war torn countries of Europe, the majority from Poland. In 1950 the Camp was officially handed over to the War Office followed, by a public enquiry, in 1951. The training area is 3 miles north east of the camp, 1600' above Sea Level, 2702 acres of rugged and challenging open moorland and some broken and undulating countryside all falling within the boundaries of Peak District National Park. The area is a mixture of MOD freehold, Leasehold, Licenced and Private land. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. |
