Swimming

© Maj John L Raybould TDThe County Swimming Championships were held at the Garrison Pool with a good representation from all the companies. First places were achieved by the following: Junior Boys - Alex and Russell Rookyard from Beccles, breaststroke, front crawl, backstroke and butterfly; Senior Boys - Oliver Backhouse from Kesgrave, breaststroke, front crawl, backstroke and butterfly; Girls - Dawn Guinivan from Haverhill, breaststroke, front crawl and butterfly; Katie Woods from Bury St Edmunds, backstroke.
Sorry, no photographs were taken of the gala or County Parade presentations, except for that on the right of the County Champions A Coy rep, receiving the trophy from Col Paul Denny.
Postscript Oct 05: At the Regional Swimming Championships at RAF Cranwell on Sat 1 Oct 05, the Rookyard brothers won 6 gold medals. 18 Eastern Region swimmers were selected to compete at the National Swimming Championships at Aldershot on Sat 8 Oct 05. Suffolk provided four; Alex and Russell Rookyard - Beccles, Dawn Guinivan - Haverhill and Oliver Backhouse - Kesgrave.
Alex swam the junior individual medley, breaststroke and freestyle relay; Russell the junior freestyle, butterfly and freestyle relay; Oliver the senior butterfly and freestyle relay.
Russell became ACF National Champion at Junior butterfly and Oliver ACF National Champion in the Senior freestyle relay.
Eastern Region won the Junior Boys and Jun Girls sections and became National Champions again, competing among the 10 regions from England, Scotland and Wales. Russell was selected to join the National ACF team for the tri-service championships at Catterick on the last weekend of November.
