PADDY TYRRELL TROPHY 2005
On a wet and very cold Friday 16th of December 2005, 100 cadets and 15 adults were preparing to move to Croxton Road for what would turn out to be a fantastic weekend. Starting off at 0930 hrs Saturday morning with 6 teams starting the first stands and as the day progressed it was becoming harder and harder to see who was in the lead (snow flurries not withstanding). Whilst the teams where on STANTA Training Area, the basic cadets were going through stands covering care of kit, foot hygiene, living in accommodation etc.
After an extremely close phase 1 of the Paddy Tyrrell Trophy Competition all the cadets stood down for a well earned rest and clean up for the Company Christmas dinner and disco. The honoured guest speaker, Suffolk ACF Commandant, Col Paul Denny, handed out promotions to several deserving cadets after which the Company Commander Maj Malcolm Cole said a few words of encouragement for the competition which continued the next day. All cadets then changed into their disco kit for the remainder of the evening under our DJ, Lt George Holdenby (Coy Training Officer).
Competition Day 2 started with a March and Shoot, followed by the obstacle course and finally the tunnel range shoot. Once all teams had completed the tasks all DS staff adjourned to deliberate the very hard task of finding the 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. And so the winners of the Paddy Tyrrell trophy 2005 (drum roll please), Lowestoft South (Queens Dragoon Guards), followed closely by Beccles (Royal Anglian) in 2nd place, and Lowestoft North (Royal Artillery) in 3rd place. And thus ended the Paddy Tyrrell Trophy Competition 2005.

SSI Roger Hemp (right) receives the Les Jackson Permanent Staff Trophy for 2005 from Les.
The Trophy is for all Instructors below the rank of Sergeant Major and is awarded to someone who, in the eyes of the permanent staff, has helped out beyond the call of duty. Captain Les Jackson, the instigator of the award said: ‘ I thought of this award because a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes with the helpers not receiving any credit and it’s a nice gesture to give some appreciation back to them.'
