It was indeed a nostalgic visit to the Fingringhoe ranges for the webmaster on that inclement Jun 04 Sunday.
Almost 20 years ago, before there were any dual carriageways between home and Colchester, I decided to do the 63 miles journey home in under the hour in what was then considered a sporty tin-top, a Renault 14 something.
I made it in 59 min and 53 secs. These days, with speed cameras and the Suffolk affinity for 40 mph stretches in apparent open countryside, it takes me more like 90 mins.

I last shot at Fingringhoe way back in 1980 something and was leading in the Sub Machine Gun Shoot in the Battalion Skill at Arms Meeting.
It was April and squally sleet showers periodically interrupted the bright spells.
With blue and numb fingers I pulled out and donned a pair of fingerless gloves and hoped my specs wouldn't get too misted up.
The Range Offr bellows: 'Major Raybould - remove those non-issue gloves.'
I complied but lost the trophy.
That beggar is now with Cambs ACF! (Afternote Dec 04 - he's now Dep Commdt. Good one Col Roger - oops! )
At that same 1980s Bn SAAM, my then teenage daughter Elfrida won the Ladies Shoot on the SMG and beat her mother, a winner for some years!
