152 MILE WALK -
SUDBURY, DERBYSHIRE, TO SUDBURY, SUFFOLK
Few people would consider walking
150 miles in one long weekend. But Suffolk Army Cadet
Force Staff Sergeant William Picton-Jenkins
of Sudbury is doing just that between 11th to 15th
November 2004 in aid of the BBC 'Children in Need'
Charity.
He intends to walk the 152 miles from Sudbury in Derbyshire to
Sudbury in Suffolk. 'It's downhill if you do it that way',
he says.
Known
to all in Suffolk ACF as 'PJ', he is no
stranger to long-distance walks. His passion for Long
Distance Endurance Walking includes the remarkable tally
of a 60 miles 26-hour non-stop walk around Epping forest
in Essex, a 24-hour non-stop walk across Dartmoor and a
48-hour 90 miles non-stop Essex Way Walk.
Involved with the Army Cadets for 28
years, now aged 39, he is the Sports and Duke of Edinburgh
Award Officer for C Company, Suffolk ACF, based in
Ipswich.
In 1982 PJ attempted to walk around
the coast of Great Britain starting from Shoeburyness. Via
the South Coast, Land's End, the Severn Bridge, around
Wales, the Western part of England, then Scotland,
crossing over to the Isle of Oban and then Skye, he
eventually reached Durness at the top westerly part of
Scotland and then walked across to John 'O' Groats. At
Wick, he had to call it a day due to ligament problems.
But his aim is to finish his coastal walk, starting from
Wick, and back down to Shoeburyness!
Another
aim, says PJ.' is to walk around the world
starting at the age of 65 or thereabouts.'
