IPSWICH ARMY CADETS STRIKE GOLD IN AN EASTERN REGION CADET FORCE ATHLETICS MEETING

Glorious weather marked the Army Cadet Force Eastern Regional Athletics and Tug of War Championships held at the newly opened Princess Royal Sports Arena in Boston, Lincolnshire.

250 Cadets, male and female, from 10 Eastern Region County Army Cadet Forces competed for the honour of going on to represent Eastern Region at the National Championships.

Suffolk ACF were represented by 10 Cadets competing in the Athletics events and by 16 in the Tug of War competition.

Suffolk medal winners were all from the two Grenadier Guards detachments in Ipswich: Cadet Allan Pang (800m Senior Gold and 1500m Senior Silver), Corporal Tom Tica (1500m Intermediate Gold), Corporal Jamie Dines (800m Intermediate Silver), Cadet Richard Ely (800m Junior Silver) and Corporal Helen McClennon (Shot Putt Senior Silver).

Gold medallists Allan Pang and Tom Tica (pictured below) will be competing in the National Athletics meeting at Grantham on 19 Jun 04.

The Suffolk ACF County Sports Officer, Staff Sergeant Instructor Ralph Bianco, said: 'We are enormously proud of the performance of our Cadets. Both Tug of War Teams came 3rd, missing Silver by one point. This was a very good effort by all concerned especially as it was our first competitive year. However, both teams will compete in the National ACF Tug of War championships on 10th July in Colchester.'
