NATIONAL TUG OF WAR SUCCESS FOR SUFFOLK ARMY CADET GIRLS JULY 2005 Suffolk Army Cadet Force are celebrating the success of their Girls Tug of War Team becoming 2005 United Kingdom National Champions. Tug
of War is a relatively new sport in the Army Cadet Force
and 2004 saw the first county teams from Suffolk ACF
competing at Regional and National Level. The success of the Girls team in winning the Regional Tug of War competition at the Eastern Region Athletics Meeting in May 2005 resulted in their being selected to enter the National ACF Tug of War Championships in July 2005. Held at the Colchester Military Festival, enthusiastic crowds cheered on the teams. After the preliminary rounds the Suffolk Girls had not lost an end against Merseyside, Norfolk, Cleveland and Highland. On points they entered the finals against their arch rivals, Highlanders, the 2004 National Champions. Suffolk ACF were most grateful for the vocal support of their local rivals, Norfolk ACF ! After a magnificent effort, with both teams moving to and fro, it was Suffolk who won the second pull to become United Kingdom National Champions. Particular thanks go to the Adult Leaders whose enthusiasm and experience had much to do with the success of these Suffolk teenagers, particularly trainer John Barber, coaches Trevor Willoughby and Pete Fowler. The Suffolk ACF Deputy Commandant, Lt Col Kelvin Ives said: ‘We celebrate the commitment and excellence of our cadets in becoming National Champions.’ The squad were: Sarah Revell from Felixstowe; Katie Barnes, Kelsey Coyne, Alicia Crewe, Rebecca Ford, Lindsay Harvey and Katie Hinton from Ipswich; Laura Day, Ali McLaren and Karen Rose from Stowmarket; Lindsey Rumbell from Wattisham. |
