You have 5-10
seconds to catch your visitor's attention.
In most cases, a web surfer will
decide in that time whether they want to stay at a
site.
Your first screen must load in that time frame, or
something in that first screen must catch their eye,
or you have lost that visitor.
Note, too, that even if your site is interesting,
visitors will be reluctant to return to it in the
future if it takes too long to load.
Pages should load quickly - the
html and graphics total, should be around 60 Kb,
according to most proficient web page designers.
If it is larger then split the page into 2 or more. eg
Photographs of one ACF Camp runs to 18 sets !
Resize photographs so they are a maximum of 950
pixels wide or 555 pixels high.
Otherwise they won't fit on the screen of the majority
of your surfers!
Photographs should be in jpg
format and compressed to between 40-50 Kb.
(To which I would add: make it a thumbnail of about
125 pixels wide and this 2kb or so image can lead to
your larger photograph.)

Don't fall into the trap of
resizing a photograph with html to make it smaller.
If it's a 360 Kb file, your visitor is STILL going to
have to wait for that 360 Kb file to load even if that
picture is going to display in a 1-inch square.
As odd as this may sound, look
at your page ONLINE immediately after you publish it.
Your page will load very quickly when you view it on
your home computer, but may be really slow when you
and others see it online.
Also, you may not have uploaded some images to your
web server and a resulting 'red x' or 'broken image'
will be seen.
